This measurement, or height, needs to be known if purchasing a new movement. The platform is available in a few heights. The two weight cuckoo movements with the dancer platform comes with the platform already on it. This is an important distinction when ordering a new cuckoo clock movement. Keep in mind just because there are dancers on the cuckoo clock, it does not mean there is an attachment. One with a dancer platform and one without the dancer platform. The two train, two weight movements come in two styles. The two styles of the two weight movements The 25 or 34 identification stamp alone means it was made by the Regula factory in Germany. A 34 means it is an eight day clock movement that runs on two weights.īoth of these are the most common cuckoo clock movements made in the world. The 25 means it is a one day clock that takes two weights. It may have more numbers or letters after the 25 or 34 but don't pay attention to anything but the a href="/product/regula-25-cuckoo-movement">25 or 34 for now. Above this wheel and to the right a little, there will be numbers that are in a stamp right in the brass. This would be above the wheel with the spikes that make the bellows go up and down. See if the cuckoo movement says 25 or 34 on it. Two train, two weight Regula Identification If the clock movement itself takes three weights, this of course is a three train movement. This means the movement has two sides of gears from big to little inside the plates. If the movement alone takes two weights, we call this a two train movement. This is separate from the movement itself. However, we are talking about two weights on the movement regardless if the clock has three weights on it. A three train movement would have three weights on the movement itself. In other words, there are three train movements that take three weights. There may be three weights on the clock, but only two weights are on the movement itself. When we say two weights, it means on the movement only. If the clock has two weights that run the movement, identifying it as a Regula is simple. It will have a stamp with a CM length usually on the left side of the back plate. The movement will be stamped with this number usually. The pendulum on a Regula cuckoo is from the top of the movement to the center of the leaf. Here are some common measurements conversions for the pendulum length. But to be certain use these methods for identification. Most of the time there will be identification markings that will reveal if it is a Regula cuckoo clock movement. Any cuckoo clock made after this time has an 80 percent chance of being a Regula. If it's your own and you want to change the movement, then go for it if you must, but you're not learning anything. Most cuckoo clocks made after 1950 have movements that are made by the Regula cuckoo clock movement company. If you can't do that, then maybe these 'so-called' pro's should leave their fingers out of them. As H/C and others have stated, I also prefer to fix them. I'm becoming more and more fed up with this through away mentality. Sure, they won't be as sought after as the old Beha's, however. At one point, the old cuckoo's will become antiques. I've rebuilt every cuckoo clock that's come my way, never installed a "replacement" movement. and it still won't look like it once did. Now, the case needs rework, new 275g weights, different plywood spacers, closing up the old holes, putting new holes in, filling and repainting the hole-plugs etc. All told, I feel the customer would have been better served if the original Hubert Herr movement would have been cleaned & overhauled with new bushings. Sisd to side spacing between the Regula and Herr movements is different as well. Then, the chain made some severe ruts into the chain-holes, as it was misaligned fore-aft at least 1/2". All told, it needed 8 bushings, as the heavy weights were way to much. Now, after around 5 yrs, the customer complains that it doesn't run any more. Although they used roughly 3/8" thick plywood "spacers" under the movement feet, the chain holes did not line up. Kept the original weights (420g), vice using the Regula optimum 275g weights. Someone long-ago substituted a Regula 25B. Based on the chain hole pattern and dimensions (side to side and fore-aft hole locations), it originally had an older Hubert Herr movement. Just working on one of these Cuckoo clocks.
